The Problem With Scale
Every community that tries to scale past human limits eventually becomes the thing it was built to replace. The hierarchy gets rigid. The rules get abstract. The people at the edges stop mattering. This isn’t a failure of intention — it’s a failure of architecture.
The solution isn’t bigger communities. It’s smaller ones that replicate.
What Local Resilience Actually Means
Resilience isn’t a stockpile. It’s not about hoarding supplies or building bunkers. Those are anxiety responses dressed up as preparation.
Real resilience is structural. It means:
- Skill density: Enough people in your local group can actually do things — grow food, fix machines, treat injuries, build shelter, teach children
- Relationship depth: You know people well enough to trust them under pressure, not just in comfortable conditions
- Decision transparency: Everyone knows how decisions get made, who makes them, and how to challenge them
- Economic sovereignty: The group can generate, exchange, and retain value without being fully dependent on external systems
None of this requires land, money, or ideology. It requires proximity, honesty, and practice.
The Small-Group Model
The architecture we use is deliberately small. Here’s the structure:
Group Size: 8–15 People
This isn’t arbitrary. Below eight, you lack skill diversity. Above fifteen, communication overhead destroys trust. Every person should be able to maintain a direct relationship with every other person. When you can’t, you’ve outgrown the model.
Weekly Rhythm
Groups meet weekly. Not for lectures — for coordination. The format:
- Check-in (5 min): What’s real this week. No performance.
- Skill share (20 min): One member teaches something practical. Rotating.
- Resource map (10 min): What does the group need? What does the group have? Match them.
- Decision round (10 min): Any proposals on the table get discussed. Consent-based, not majority-rule.
- Close (5 min): Next week’s skill share, any commitments made.
Total: under an hour. Consistent enough to build momentum. Short enough to sustain.
Replication, Not Growth
When a group hits fifteen, it splits. Two groups of eight, each with enough experienced members to maintain the culture. The groups stay connected through a simple coordination layer — shared resource lists, quarterly gatherings, mutual aid agreements.
This is how mycelium works. Small nodes, dense connections, no center.
The Skill Stack
Every resilient local group needs coverage across these categories. Not expertise in all of them — just basic competence distributed across members:
- Food: Growing, preserving, foraging, cooking from scratch
- Repair: Mechanical, electrical, structural, textile
- Health: First aid, herbalism, nervous system regulation, birth support
- Education: Teaching children, mentoring adults, transmitting knowledge without institutions
- Trade: A skill or product that generates value outside the group
- Communication: Secure messaging, conflict resolution, facilitation

What Goes Wrong
Most intentional communities fail for three reasons:
- Ideology over function: The group optimizes for shared beliefs instead of shared capacity. When beliefs diverge (they always do), the group fractures.
- Invisible hierarchy: Someone is making the real decisions, but the structure pretends they aren’t. Resentment builds. Trust collapses.
- No exit protocol: People can’t leave gracefully, so they leave explosively. Or they stay and corrode the group from inside.
The fix for all three is the same: make the structure explicit. Written agreements. Clear roles. Defined exit paths. It’s not glamorous. It’s architecture.
Start Where You Are
You don’t need to move to a farm. You don’t need to find your tribe. You need five to seven people within driving distance who are willing to meet weekly and actually do this.
Start with the check-in. Start with the skill share. Build the muscle of showing up consistently with the same people. The rest follows.
The unit of resilience isn’t the individual. It’s the small group.
